On April 1, 2025, in New York City, MedStart Health hosted a livestreamed debate about the future of medicine and whether AI will eventually replace doctors. Zoi Capital Managing Director, Dr. Razmi, and Avisha NessAiver, the host of @DistilledScience video blogs, had a lively discussion and presented their cases for their respective sides.
While Dr. Razmi argued that the reality of healthcare data and clinical workflows are quite complicated and require man + machine to achieve the best outcomes, Avi highlighted the rapidly improving capabilities of the latest AI models and how they can become more accurate than the doctors in short order. The online commentary from those watching the debate online and the questions from the live audience highlighted the fact that we’re still in the early days of this technology and its application in healthcare and none of us know what the ultimate state of affairs will be.
From Ron: “While AI can automate many things and be a great assistant and augmenter, practicing medicine requires much more than just analyzing data and thus doctors will be leading it long-term”
From Avi: “We’re seeing more powerful AI models on a monthly basis and the rate of progress is astounding. It is hard to imagine that if AI becomes more accurate and faster than the doctors that it will not drive much of the practice of medicine”
