This is creating momentum for what needs to be done to make pathology ready for the AI revolution. The first step would be to digitize as many of the slides as possible (called Whole Slide Imaging) and then use those to train good AI algorithms that can then assist in interpretation of pathology images. Well, I’m happy to report that there is a significant push to make pathology digital. As a matter of fact, being able to train and use AI models to improve and accelerate reading pathology images might have been an accelerant of this push. Another factor that has made pathology a slower turf so far for AI is that there is less agreement between pathologists in reading of the pathology slides and thus not as easy as radiology in creating training data sets.
